Abstract

The article is based on practice in Tanzania, and uses the musical Sukumiwa Mpakani, a Swahili hip-hop musical, as research object. The article explores how we as art educators can use our practice as a foundation for democratic formation of both participants in the project, ourselves and of local established art practice. The discussion revolves around themes that come to the fore after analysis of interviews with the initiators during the process, as well as reflections in the aftermath of the project. By utilizing a street culture as a scenic form, the established art practices and understanding of art in Tanzania, are being challenged.
